Direction before title. A better way to think about your next move.
Your next role does not have to look bigger on paper. It needs to fit what you want to develop.

Start with the work, not the title
Two roles with the same title can mean very different working days. An FP&A role might involve leading planning alongside management, or primarily consolidating reports. Before choosing your next step, consider which problems you want to solve and which decisions you want to influence.
Make your criteria specific
Write down three things you want more of in your next role: analysis supporting business decisions, international collaboration or ownership of a complete process. Then add what you are unwilling to compromise on. This helps distinguish an attractive title from a genuinely relevant opportunity.
Ask about authority and expectations
What should the person have achieved after six months? Who uses the analysis, and for which decisions? What resources and authority come with the responsibility? The answers often reveal more than a long list of duties.
Start the conversation before you need to move
Our view is that career conversations benefit from time. You do not have to be ready to leave your current role to articulate your direction. At Rolebroker, we start with your experience, ambitions and what would make the next opportunity relevant to you.
